Title: «Symmetric disquisitions»
Abstract:
Symmetries play a very important role in physics despite the fact that physical systems seldomly exhibit any exact symmetries. I will discuss to what extent symmetries are naturally expected to appear in physical systems and illustrate it with some examples taken from the orbits of planets, the hydrogen atom and cosmology.

A remarkable property of the orbits of planets is that they are flat. An even more remarkable property is that they are closed. These properties are explained by the symmetries of the Newtonian force. These symmetries are shared by the Coulomb force and they are also responsible for the exceptional properties of the Hydrogen atom spectral lines. Image courtesy of NASA
