The Fred Hersch Trio, featuring pianist Fred Hersch, bassist John Hébert, and drummer Eric McPherson, has remained at the pinnacle of modern jazz and is venerated as the epitome of thrilling interplay and dynamic spontaneity. The trio played the inaugural concert on the Steinway B piano donated by Bob Feld and family in 2016 and they return tonight, ten years later, to commemorate that occasion. With more than twelve albums to their credit, their 2018 Live In Europe (Palmetto), which documents one remarkable evening in Brussels, has been hailed as their best to date. Named Best Jazz Group in the 2019 DownBeat Critics Poll, The Wall Street Journal calls the trio “one of the major ensembles of our time,” while The New Yorker has applauded the group for their “high lyricism and high danger.” The Trio has appeared at major jazz festivals throughout Europe and the US and have regularly headlined at the legendary Village Vanguard since 1977. A seventeen-time Grammy nominee as both jazz pianist and composer, Fred Hersch is a pervasively influential creative force who has shaped the music of the jazz pantheon for over more than three decades as an improviser, composer, educator, bandleader, collaborator and recording artist. Proclaimed “an elegant force of musical invention” by The L.A. Times, and “a living legend” by The New Yorker, he has regularly garnered the most prestigious awards in jazz and has long set the standard for expressive interpretation and inventive creativity in a variety of settings, from solo performances to his era-defining trio and duo partnerships. With more than fifty albums to his credit as a leader or co-leader, Hersch consistently receives lavish critical praise and numerous international awards for each highly anticipated new release, including his 2024 release Silent, Listening, produced by Manfred Eicher for ECM Records.
