Join Dr. Jim Tidwell as he discusses Cove Spring and its role in the history and development of Frankfort. He will review how springs are formed geologically and how this spring is recharged from the surrounding regions. He will also explore the history of the use of this water resource and how it has influenced the growth of Frankfort as well as the associated development of the early bourbon industry. Several commercial enterprises have existed on the site over the years. In more recent years, the resource has transitioned into a public park and nature preserve for the City of Frankfort. Recent growth and improvements will also be discussed.
Dr. Jim Tidwell is Professor Emeritus in Aquaculture and Aquatic Sciences from Kentucky State University, having retired in 2023 after 37 years. He was named a Distinguished Professor at KSU in 2014 and received a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019 from the United States Aquaculture Society. He has published over 150 referenced journal articles and is author/editor of five books. Dr. Tidwell developed an interest in Cove Spring when he first visited the site in 1989 to evaluate the spring's potential as a possible trout farm for then owner Jerry Hurst.
