Who and what are we sharing Frank Smith Park with???Come join the Friends of Frank Smith Park and the Biology Society of South Australia for a joint iNaturalist Bio-Blitz.
We'll all be scientists for this one- but we'll have some actual scientific experts joining us - helping to identify some of the cool flora and fauna at the Frank Smith Park. Meeting at 9.30 at the rotunda we'll break into smaller groups and explore the park documenting what we find and uploading it into iNaturalist and learning as we go from some experts in the fields of flora and fauna
Our findings will be uploaded onto the iNaturalist Global Biodiversity network - allowing it to be used by scientists all over the world!
Hope to see you all there
What is iNaturalist:
iNaturalist is a freely avaliable app in both the android and apple play stores. iNaturalist provides a place to record and organize nature findings, meet other nature enthusiasts, and learn about the natural world. It encourages the participation of a wide variety of nature enthusiasts, including, but not exclusive to, hikers, hunters, birders, beach combers, mushroom foragers, park rangers, ecologists, and fishermen. Through connecting these different perceptions and expertise of the natural world, iNaturalist hopes to create extensive community awareness of local biodiversity and promote further exploration of local environments.
(you can find more details here https://www.inaturalist.org/)
What is a bio-blitz:
A bioblitz is a communal citizen-science effort to record as many species within a designated location and time period as possible.
Bioblitzes are great ways to engage the public to connect to their environment while generating useful data for science and conservation. They are also an excuse for naturalists, scientists, and curious members of the public to meet in person in the great outdoors and are alot of fun!
Who are the Biology Society of South Australia:
The Biology Society of South Australia (BSSA) is a place for people with an interest in biodiversity, bio-discovery, and bio-conservation. The BSSA runs events throughout the year including nature walks, ecology-themed talks/seminars, research grants and annual quiz night. The BSSA also hosts the BSSA Podcast where we bring you conversations on biology and biodiversity conservation in SA.
