Join us for a fun-filled Starry Night including an Italian dinner, silent auction, elections, and awards. This year's program "Lights Out, Birds Safe: Community Solutions for Migration Protection" will be given by Michelle Wooten, PhD; assistant professor of astronomy education in the department of physics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

The same conditions that bring people joy when stargazing under a dark, star-filled night sky are the same conditions that birds - and many other species - need for their optimal livelihood. In this talk, we will explore the benefits that experiencing bright days and dark nights has on our circadian rhythm, further; how the rapid increase of artificial light at night disrupts this cycle, including the migratory journeys of billions of birds every spring and fall. Attendees will learn practical steps to reduce these impacts, using hands on examples and demos. We will explore successful “Lights Out” initiatives, bird‑friendly building practices, and smarter municipal lighting strategies, and brainstorm how these practices can come alive where we live and work.
