This lecture reconsiders the kingdom of Macedon as both an agent and a catalyst of an epochal
transformation in the ancient world. The analysis focuses above all on the material evidence for the
political, social, and cultural processes underlying this transformation. From the complex transition of
the fourth century BCE to the formation of the kingdoms of the Diadochi, archaeology allows us to trace
the gradual transformation of the polis, the rise of new elites, the reconfiguration of relations between the
public and private spheres, and the emergence of capital cities conceived as settings for the representation
of monarchical power.
