FRAMEWORK Film Screening: Dogspiracy
About this Event
What happens when our desire for companionship becomes part of a global system of commerce—and who bears responsibility when that system causes harm?
As part of the Goucher Art Galleries’ FRAMEWORK Film Screening Series, join us for a screening of Dogspiracy, a documentary investigating the hidden systems behind the commercial dog trade and the political, economic, and consumer choices that allow animal exploitation to persist.
Following British veterinarian, author, and animal welfare campaigner Dr. Marc Abraham OBE, Dogspiracy moves between the United States and the United Kingdom as Abraham investigates puppy mills, canine fertility clinics, puppy smuggling, and the regulatory systems surrounding the breeding and sale of dogs.
The film asks viewers to look beyond individual cases of animal cruelty toward the structures that make those conditions possible. Through encounters with breeders, advocates, policymakers, and others involved in the industry, Dogspiracy considers how legislation, commerce, enforcement, and consumer behavior intersect—and why efforts to reform those systems can prove so difficult.
At the center of the documentary is a deceptively familiar relationship: the one between people and their dogs. Dogspiracy asks what responsibilities accompany that relationship and what it means to make an ethical choice within a system whose workings are often deliberately kept out of sight.
About the Film
Dogspiracy is directed by British documentary filmmaker and producer Paul Crompton, whose work includes the BAFTA-nominated BBC series Timothy Spall: Somewhere at Sea and the award-winning documentaries The Limbless Mountaineer, The Aviatrix, Ranchers, and Iron Men.
