About this Event

'this is the imprint of the horse who knows history seeking the archaeology of our own understanding'

Rose English. Rosita Clavel - a horse opera libretto text (1997)

Rose English narrates the horse in words and pictures from both her work and the work of Leonora Carrington. As in all good tales, surprising people, places and things shimmer together across time and space, and meaning is suddenly made, however briefly. Rose will share elements from her own archive and attend to Carrington's, tracing histories of horse legends from the cavalry to Country Life, from Bucephalus to bridles. Sitting in Maresfield Gardens, in the embrace of Freud's own collection of antiquities, Rose opens up an underworld channel to enable Epona's Wise Mares to converse with Carrington's Steeds.

This performance is curated by Han Lu Tao, Sarah Vidalin, Cecilia Brandon-Cross and Ana Karime Sierra as part of The Courtauld's MA Curating programme.

Bio:

Rose English emerged from the Conceptual art, dance and feminist scenes of 1970’s Britain to become one of the most influential performance artists working today. Her uniquely interdisciplinary work combines elements of theatre, circus, opera and poetry to explore themes of gender politics, the identity of the performer and the metaphysics of presence. English has mounted performances in ice-rinks; at the Royal Court Theatre and Tate Britain, London and Lincoln Center, New York; and collaborated with horses, magicians and acrobats to create legendary site-specific performances and large-scale spectaculars. She also works in other media such as film and installation and recently had a solo survey exhibition at Museum der Moderne Salzburg.
