Dit jaar (op 25 november) is het niet alleen 50 jaar geleden dat Suriname onafhankelijk werd, 2025 is ook het jaar dat Fra Fra Sound al 45 jaar bestaat! Des te meer reden op Fra Fra Sound eens te verwelkomen in De X.
Fra Fra Sound is een Nederlands-Surinaams-Caribische muziekformatie met internationale reputatie. De muzikale kracht en inventiviteit van dit septet zijn niet onopgemerkt gebleven buiten Nederland.
Opvallend is dat Fra Fra Sound zich even goed thuis voelt op wereldmuziekpodia en -festivals, in jazzclubs en -festivals, als in theaters en concertzalen. Andersom geldt hetzelfde: wereldmuziek-liefhebbers, doorwrochte jazz-kenners en crossover aficionados voelen zich allemaal aangetrokken tot Fra Fra’s aanstekelijke muziek.
In de afgelopen decennia verzorgde Fra Fra succesvolle optredens in Europa, diverse landen in Afrika, rondom de Indische Oceaan, het Caraïbisch gebied, Zuid-Amerika en in de Verenigde Staten.
Sinds de oprichting in de Bijlmer zijn er meerdere bezettingen geweest en heeft de band verschillende artistieke stadia doorgemaakt. Stond aanvankelijk de exploratie van Surinaamse kaseko, kawina en winti centraal, al snel ontstond de drang om zich niet alleen tot deze genres te beperken.
Vanaf begin jaren negentig maakt Fra Fra van deze vrijheid gebruik om de uitgebreide verwantschappen tussen de diverse muziekstijlen die hun roots in Afrika hebben te onderzoeken. Vanzelfsprekend rekent Fra Fra niet alleen de Caraïbische en Latijns-Amerikaanse muziekstijlen tot de muziek van de Afrikaanse diaspora, maar ook de jazz, blues, soul en gospel van de Verenigde Staten.
Fra Fra Sound is het gelukt om tot een volstrekt eigen geluid te komen, waarin Caraïbische en Afrikaanse ritmes en grooves op subtiele wijze worden verweven met jazz-improvisatie. African-Caribbean crossover avant la lettre - zo valt de muziek van Fra Fra Sound nog het bondigst te karakteriseren.
Fra Fra Sound presenteert en speelt op dit moment materiaal van haar laatstverschenen album Kula Wroko Kibri.

This year (on November 25th) it is not only 50 years ago that Suriname became independent, 2025 is also the year that Fra Fra Sound already exists for 45 years! All the more reason to invite Fra Fra Sound to play at De X.
Fra Fra Sound is a Dutch-Surinamese-Caribbean music formation with an international reputation. The musical strength and inventiveness of this septet have not gone unnoticed outside the Netherlands.
It is striking that Fra Fra Sound feels equally at home on world music stages and festivals, in jazz clubs and festivals, as in theaters and concert halls as well. The same applies the other way around: world music lovers, thorough jazz connoisseurs and crossover aficionados are all attracted to Fra Fra's infectious music.
In recent decades, Fra Fra has provided successful performances in Europe, various countries in Africa, around the Indian Ocean, the Caribbean, South America and in the United States.
Since its foundation in Bijlmer, there have been multiple line-ups and the band has gone through various artistic stages. Initially, the exploration of Surinamese kaseko, kawina and winti was central, but soon the urge arose to not limit itself to these genres.
Since the early nineties, Fra Fra has used this freedom to explore the extensive relationships between the various musical styles that have their roots in Africa. It goes without saying that Fra Fra does not only include Caribbean and Latin American musical styles as music of the African diaspora, but also jazz, blues, soul and gospel from the United States.
Fra Fra Sound has succeeded in creating a completely unique sound, in which Caribbean and African rhythms and grooves are subtly interwoven with jazz improvisation. African-Caribbean crossover avant la lettre - that is the most succinct way to characterize the music of Fra Fra Sound.
