About The Course
Expanding Our Creative Toolbox
Students will actively participate in a hands-on experience working with art materials and exploring various techniques as they develop art ideas and strategies that can be applied to creative personal growth. Students will expand and deepen their art projects to incorporate more perspectives, inquiry, and social-emotional awareness.
The goals of this course is to have students explore visual art concepts, apply those concepts to create finished artwork, participate in round table discussion to share ideas and art products. The teacher will also review art with the students who will participate in discussion in order to deepen their understanding of artwork, its healing power, and its emotional impact.
*Suggested Age Groups for this course are Adults, Young Adults, and Mature Teenagers*
Weekly Course Breakdown
Intro to Drawing
- 5/18 - 6-8pm - Intro to drawing figure and still life shade, line, value, composition
- 5/25 - 6-8pm - Exploring Mandalas / Pattern and design
- 6/1 - 6-8pm - Personal exploration working from photos personal found objects
Intro to Painting
- 6/8 - 6-8pm -Painting Warm/cool colors with shapes
- 6/15 - 6-8pm - Imaginary landscape
- 6/21 - 6-8pm - 3D building with found inexpensive material - sticks, wire, found objects
*Please Note That Students Will Need to Bring Their Own Supplies For this Course*
Intro to Drawing:
- Pencil, Black Sharpie and or thin Micron black pen
- 1 Box of 24 markers
- 1 box Prismacolor 24 color pencil box or any chosen brand
- 1 ream of drawing paper 11" by 14" or choice of canvas
- glue sticks / Safety scissors
- Painters tape
Intro to Paint
- Paint brushes, paper towels, paper cups
- Watercolor set and or acrylic paint set
- Watercolor paper and or canvas
- Sharpies and or Posca paint markers sets
3D Building
- Found inexpensive material - sticks, wire, found objects
José Santos received his Bachelors of Fine Arts and Masters of Science in Art Education from Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, MA. He has worked for a number of years as an art educator in the Somerville, MA public schools and is also a professional artist. He currently resides at the Artist Building at 300 Summer Street in Boston, MA where he lives and works in a vibrant artist community. In 2007, Mr. Santos was the recipient of a $5,000 art renewal grant for teachers which allowed him to travel and work in Portugal over the summer. He was also an artist-in-resident at Byrdcliff Arts Colony in Woodstock, NY. Mr. Santos been part of numerous solo and group art exhibitions in museums, universities, and galleries and in 2004, the Fogg Art Museum in Cambridge, MA purchased three of his pieces for its permanent collection.
