Your teachers
Tanya – Tanya has been teaching Lindy Hop for eight years and has trained extensively across Europe with internationally renowned dancers. She has competed internationally, taught workshops around the UK and has a strong foundation in Lindy Hop, Collegiate Shag, Charleston, 1920s and 1930s solo jazz, movement, rhythm and musicality. Her teaching style is clear, progressive, technique-focused and encouraging, with an emphasis on connection, creativity and building confident social dancers.
Sophie – Since her first Lindy Hop taster class at university, Sophie has been hooked on the joy of dancing, swing music and the connections and community it brings. Her teaching style aims to guide others to find more joy through dance, becoming more connected to the music, their own bodies and each other. She has travelled to dance festivals around the UK, Europe and danced in cities around the world. Sophie has been teaching for a few years and is excited to delve into new content with you.
Together, we teach both lead and follow roles and are committed to inclusive, progressive teaching where all dancers are encouraged to explore both sides of the partnership if they wish.
What is Lindy Hop?
Lindy Hop is a Black American vernacular dance that grew out of many styles collaborating and fusing, dancing to the authentic jazz music of the 1920s – 1930s, in Harlem. Black American dancers met in the Savoy Ballroom to find connection and joy, in spite of adversity. The Savoy Ballroom had a no-discrimination policy, and Lindy Hop legend Frankie Manning said visitors were judged on their dancing skills, not the colour of their skin. We honour the history and culture of Lindy Hop in our teaching and community.
Which role should I choose?
We encourage exploration of all dance roles. The "Lead" is like a driver, steering the general direction of the dance and setting up a lot of the patterns. The "Follower" responds to the direction the lead gives, but they also have their own voice in the dance. We believe partner dancing is a conversation between both roles and the music.
If you are happy to dance either role, we encourage you to book a "Flexi" ticket. They help to keep the class balanced, and it also means we can release tickets quicker if one role sells out. We will always aim to give you your preferred role on the night, but the final mix will depend on who attends.
