About this learning programme:
The Foundation course in Haematology and Cancer Care is a taught learning module which aims to build upon and advance the repertoire of knowledge, skills, attitudes and professional values in the promotion of competence in the nurses’ clinical practice in Cancer Care & Haematology nursing. The goal of the course is that students will be able to safely and competently care for Haematology and cancer patients in the Haematology and cancer care environment in which they are employed.
Learning outcomes:
On completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of normal anatomy and physiology and its application to oncological and Haematological disorders.
2. Demonstrate the application of available knowledge to guide the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of evidence-based nursing care.
3. Recognise side effects of systemic anti-cancer treatments and manage as appropriate.
4. Evaluate clinical significance and nursing implications of assessment data.
5. Demonstrate and maintain therapeutic and professional relationships by delivering systematic and comprehensive patient care.
6. Integrate research and reflection into clinical practice.
7. Promote continuity of care by contributing to multidisciplinary collaboration across the health care continuum.
Mode of delivery: Face-to-face (with online supporting materials)
Course duration: 5 days over a 5 -month period
Pre requisites: Registered nurses working within the area of Oncology/Hematology
Assessments:
Theoretical learning will be examined using a Case Presentation, and an end of module OSCI and scenario based simulated learning in the Clinical assessment unit. Clinical learning will be examined through the attainment of Clinical Competencies in student’s employment setting.
How will I benefit?
You will be able to safely and competently care for Cancer and Haematology patients in the Oncology & Haematology care environment. Successful completion of this module will prepare students who wish to pursue a Postgraduate Diploma in Cancer Care & Haematology. Students will also obtain a Certificate of Completion as proof of training
· This is an NMBI accredited course with 28 CEUs.
· Trinity College Dublin accredited.
Cost: Free for St. James's Hospital staff. €500 for external participants.
