At the heart of Howard Tan’s upcoming solo exhibition, ????? ??????? ??? ????? ??????? ???????? lies the concept of found objects—elements collected over the years that reflect Howard’s childhood memories, particularly from the fishing villages of his upbringing. These materials, whether wood, metal, or concrete, come together in assemblage works that showcase his lifelong connection to disorganized settings filled with rich textures. This tactile approach almost mirrors the ambiance of dilapidated spaces in Penang, capturing the essence of a locale steeped in history and sentiment. By repurposing these found objects, he crafts an intersection between the past and present, while also revealing the beauty inherent in what is often forgotten and overlooked.
Building upon his earlier assemblage works, Howard’s current exhibition is a natural progression of his artistic practice. His previous pieces laid the groundwork for a more playful exploration of mixed media, a technique he’s intimately familiar with, thanks to his formative experiences. Howard’s creative process resembles that of a chef in the kitchen—scouring his surroundings for “ingredients” and trusting his intuition to guide the assembly of each piece. Just as a recipe evolves through experimentation, Howard’s creations emerge from a thoughtful interplay of materialities, resulting in a blend of textures and forms, ultimately culminating in works that evoke both nostalgia and a sense of place.
