Ghost Train: Destination The Unknown
6:15pm Monday 31st March at Sheffield Station
Please note this is an 18+ event as we spend time in The Station Inn at Silkstone Common
This March Strange Britain are partnering with community rail group Penistone Line Partnership and are bringing back our Ghost Train event due to popular demand and as part of the lineup of 2025's Festival of the Outdoors.
This time it will be a return trip from Sheffield to Silkstone Common, where we will have a few stories and a chance for a drink at The Station Inn, hearing myths, legends, and ghost stories along the way.
The ticket price is £22 and this includes your train travel. Booking fees may apply.
The Penistone Line, which runs between Sheffield and Huddersfield via Barnsley and Penistone, has a history that dates back almost two centuries. In that time it has picked up more than its fair share of ghost stories, perhaps down to the fact that its early history was marked by a number of accidents, tragedies, and disasters, leading one Victorian reporter to call the line: The Graveyard of the Railways.
Ghost Train: Destination The Unknown, will feature author & storyteller Adrian Finney travelling along the line, telling the myths, legends, and ghost stories along the way, in a designated section of carriage. There’s tales of a policeman who still patrols his beat from beyond the grave, ghost train, a Victorian-era hoax, and the story of one of English folklore’s most infamous figures.
We meet just outside Sheffield Station, by the Salmon of Steel statue, at 6:15pm. We will then board a train before travelling to Silkstone Common. We will be back in Sheffield for approximately 9:30pm.
We will have a few stories at Sheffield Station before embarking along the Penistone Line up to Silkstone Common, where we shall disembark, for an hour in the wonderful Station Inn.
We will then board a train back towards Sheffield, hearing a couple more stories along the way, before arriving back at Sheffield Station.
We believe that this is a national first, that this is the first time an event like this has taken place on the national rail network, and we would like to thank everyone at Penistone Line Partnership and Northern for making this possible.
Tying in with the Ghost Train, Adrian’s new book Ghosts on the Penistone Line, is out now and will be available on the day at a special discount rate over the rrp.
