About this Event
The Victoria Palaeontology Society and Tillicum Centre are collaborating to bring you the 28th annual Fossil Fair, a display of fossils found on Vancouver Island, and elsewhere in British Columbia.
See and touch a diversity of real ancient BC fossil animals and plants including dinosaur bones, ammonites, trilobites, corals, mollusks, insects, giant palm leaves and microscopic fossils, ranging in age from the Cambrian (550 million years ago) to the end of the last Ice Age (10,000 years ago). This is a hands-on event, with real fossils, a kids scavenger hunt with prizes, and fossil-related crafts.
The Fossil Fair is organized by citizen scientists and professionals. The public is encouraged to bring in fossils found in BC for identification by experts, including experts from the Royal BC Museum paleontology collections. The Society participates in Passport to Science.
BC fossils are important globally for their scientific and educational value and are recognized as part of BC’s heritage under provincial legislation. Information on BC’s Provincial Fossil Framework will be available, as will information about BC’s Provincial fossil, the Elasmosaur, a marine reptile about 80 million years old from the Courtenay area of Vancouver Island, discovered 30 years ago by a keen-eyed 10-year-old.
The Victoria Palaeontology Society cooperates with palaeontologists who research fossils collected by Society members. Information will be provided on some of the scientific contributions made by members, including the discovery and naming of new species. All scientifically significant fossils found by members become part of the Royal British Columbia Museum collection, as per legislation.
The Society is a member of the British Columbia Paleontological Alliance, an umbrella organization representing the interests of member paleontological organizations in the province.
