“As soon as I see a border, I either race toward it and leap over, or cross it stealthily, with a step.” - Adania Shibli Come join Forum for Prison Abolition's monthly assembly at the 2nd floor of Folkets Hus.
It is the second session in a series of abolitionist workshops. We will put a focus on border abolitionism, drawing attention to the situation on the European borders, and surveillance technologies that are used to restrict the freedom of movement and that eventually repress people on the move. The workshop consists of three presentations, followed by discussions.
We always welcome both new people and people already active in the group. There will be some food at the meeting. So spread the word and bring friends and comrades!
Plan for the day:
1. Welcome and extensive check in
2. Presentations:
a. Mapping lessons: National and imperial border regimes
b. Frontext and Danish complicities - on territoriality, materiality and technologies that fortify borders
c. Field notes from the border: restriction and violation of the freedom of movement, resistance and solidarity on the border, and abolitionist futures (a theoretical excursion)
3. How to practice border abolitionism
* Radical imagination practice
* Creating alternatives
4. What comes next? / Check out
Description:
Borders and prisons are fundamental to managing the wealth, social inequalities, and opposition to the harms created by capitalism and the present round of neocolonial dispossession.
The (neo)colonial order that is reinforced by Western democracies is using the logic of apartheid to erect physical, psychosocial and bureaucratic barriers that divide and regulate the flow of bodies - borders restrict, punish, marginalise and violently push back illegalized and racialised bodies.
The presentations will dive into mapping lessons that depict national and imperial border regimes, focusing on different institutions and technologies that are being used to restrict and violate the freedom of movement.
The presentations will also focus on solidarity structures, their resistance against borders, drawing on the theory and practice of border abolitionism.
