Forced Migration in the Art of Samuel Bak

Alexandra Cardon, Chief Curator of the Samuel Bak Museum: The Learning Center, will present a talk on themes of forced migration in the paintings of Samuel Bak. Born in 1933 in Vilna, Bak survived the Holocaust with his mother and fled across war-torn Europe before eventually settling in the United States.
As a survivor of genocide, Bak’s work bears witness to war, displacement, and humanitarian crises through powerful symbolic imagery. Recurring motifs such as birds and uprooted trees, prominent in his post-2000 work, reflect his personal history and the broader global refugee experience.
Following the lecture, attendees are invited to tour the exhibition Justice and Hope, featuring artists who have also been displaced by war and genocide.
