FoodSEqual Plymouth FISH FINGER celebration event

Supplementary information: The FoodSEqual project is part of the 'Transforming the UK Food System for Healthy People and a Healthy Environment SPF Programme' which aims to fundamentally transform the UK food system by placing healthy people and a healthy natural environment at its centre (https://research.reading.ac.uk/food-systems-equality/ ).

It is about Improving access to food that is healthy, affordable and sustainable for people in Plymouth, putting the community at the heart of the project so that local people can lead change, and supporting connections between communities and the organisations that supply their food. We have trained five community food researchers (CFR) in Whitleigh, Plymouth, who have been supporting our research activities.

Our work identified fish as a food commodity of interest and several community-led workshops, facilitated by our CFR and involving various fish experts, took place. Findings suggest local people want the following: 1) opportunities to try new fish (including how to cook it); 2) better access to (affordable) fish; 3) better understanding of how the fish supply chain works and 4) to know how their voices can be heard in policy decision-making.

The culmination of our research workshops is The Plymouth Fishfinger - an innovation being led by the FoodSEqual Plymouth research team, alongside local stakeholders (Sole of Discretion, Plymouth Fish and Seafood Association and Sir John Hunt secondary school). The prototype fishfinger, which has been co-designed and co-produced by school students will be both healthy and sustainable, ensuring that local fish remains in the local community – the intention is to get this product into the school meal system locally.
