PANEL DISCUSSION
Lecture Theatre C (LTC)
We are living through an unprecedented global food crisis. Despite high levels of food production, there are millions of people currently experiencing hunger. International organisations, food policy experts and community leaders have sounded the alarm; however, the urgent actions needed to properly address this emergency are yet to be taken.
The reasons behind this crisis are complex, and involve not only the current war in Ukraine, but other violent conflicts around the world, the increasing effects of climate change and the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic. There is no single solution to this problem: international actions and policies are needed, but local answers and the involvement of local actors are also fundamental.
Despite its dire consequences, the food crisis is not always adequately covered by the media. Its complexity discourages sustained and nuanced reporting, and - not unlike the climate crisis - journalists need to develop new tools and sensibilities when covering it. To meet this urgent challenge, we need creative approaches informed by the experiences of those at the forefront of the issue.
Food: Responding to the Global Crisis is a 1-day event at London College of Communication. It will be an interdisciplinary meeting point, bringing together journalists, academics, artists and activists to explore challenges, as well as possible solutions.
The event will also launch the magazine, Food, which has been produced by students from our Media School and participants from the Refugee Journalism Project. The magazine reports on the food crisis, with a focus on the individuals and initiatives aimed at addressing the issue both in the UK and globally. Copies of Food will be available at the event.
