Food As Medicine - Free Online Course

Food as Medicine is a 7-session, online certificate program guided by a licensed, registered nutritionist. The goal of this course is to learn how your food and drink choices affect your health.

Workshop Description:

This workshop will certify participants as Nutrition Health Ambassadors. Nutrition Health Ambassadors will help encourage healthy eating to prevent disease in their own lives and in their communities. Be prepared to discuss problems/barriers related to eating healthy and disease control. Share the best ideas for planning and preparing healthy foods without overspending. Participate in solving health and environmental problems for yourself and your community. Share recipes that might be helpful to others or that need help to make them more nutritious.

Workshop objectives:

Participants will be able to:

1) identify at least three diseases that can be prevented and treated by food choices;

2) name at least 2 food groups that can help prevent disease;

3) develop a plan to reduce the burden of disease for individuals and their communities.

The certificate program is open to all adults.

Cost: Free

Length of Course: 7 sessions in four weeks.

Tuesday, January 14, 2025: Introduction to Food as Medicine

Thursday, January 16, 2025: Food as Medicine for Heart Disease

Tuesday, January 21, 2025: Food as Medicine for Diabetes

Thursday, January 23, 2025: Roughage for Gut Health

Tuesday, January 28, 2025: Food Reduces Blood Pressure

Thursday, January 30, 2025: Flu Busting Nutrition

Tuesday, February 4, 2022: Eating for your Brain Health

To receive a Certificate of Completion and become a Nutrition Health Ambassador:

· Attend at least 5 of the 7 workshops.

· Submit and present recipes during at least 5 of the 7 workshops

· Documentation (i.e., medical notes, family emergencies, etc.) will override an absence.

· Complete 10 of the surveys.

Credentials Earned: This is a non-credit certificate course.

By the end of the seven sessions, participants should be able to identify:

1. Five of the top leading causes of death that can be affected by eating habits

2. Eating habits that can prevent at least five causes of death.

3. Three ways to change current eating habits for a healthier you.

Who should participate? Adults who are interested in eating well for a healthier life.

Course Instructor: Dr. Amy Schweitzer is a public health nutritionist and adjunct professor at the University of the District of Columbia. Dr. Schweitzer has been in the field of Dietetics and Public Health Nutrition for over 30 years. She enjoys demonstrating how nutrition can prevent healthcare woes while saving lives and money.
