About this Event
FOLKS Speaker Event with Jocassee Wild Child
Join Kerry McKenzie, Director of Jocassee Wild Child Outdoor Laboratory Experiences, for a brief overview of how Lake Jocassee and the Jocassee Gorges serve as a living classroom for local students. This presentation highlights the benefits of outdoor learning, its impact on youth development, and how the program strengthens environmental stewardship and community connection throughout the region.
With more than 20 years of experience in education, Kerry blends her background in psychology, physical education, child development, and health education with a deep love for the outdoors. She holds a Master’s degree from West Virginia University and began her career training future teachers in physical education and early childhood motor development. Over the years, she has designed award-winning programs that inspire children and families to embrace healthy, active lifestyles through movement, nature, and hands-on exploration.
As a Certified Upstate Master Naturalist and Jocassee Wild Naturalist, Kerry brings unique expertise in interpreting the rare ecology and cultural history of the Jocassee Gorges. Her vision for Jocassee Wild Child is rooted in the belief that every child—regardless of background—deserves the opportunity to experience wild places, spark curiosity, and build a lifelong connection to the natural world.
