Join us for a guided walk exploring the ecology, folklore and traditional uses of the plants that are coming into bloom.
About this Event

Led by local ecologist Eric Swithinbank.

May is one of the richest months for wildflowers on Horfield Common. As we explore the Common in late spring, we will ask:

  • Why do certain wildflowers flourish in May?
  • Where do different species grow, and what conditions do they prefer?
  • What stories lie behind their names?
  • How were these plants used in traditional medicine and everyday life?
  • Which flowers were linked to protection, luck or seasonal celebrations?

This walk combines natural history with storytelling, helping us notice the detail and diversity of the Common at its most colourful.

Please dress for the weather and be prepared to walk! The talk will be approximately 90 minutes.

There are limited spaces on this walk. Booking on a first come first served basis, and must be booked in advance!

Ticket prices

£10 per person, which includes the Eventbrite service and processing fees.

Cancellation/Postponing due to Poor Weather

This event takes place outdoors, and therefore unfortunately may need to be postponed or cancelled in the days leading up to the event if it seems that the weather will be too poor for it to be run safely. FoHC will always aim to confirm cancellation of the event 24 – 48 hours in advance (though on very rare occasions, sudden weather changes may mean it's closer than this). Please keep an eye on your emails for information regarding this.
