About this Event

Folk Life Drawing

HappeningInMCR and The Portico Library invites you to explore a Life Drawing class with a difference.

Join us for a series of immersive Folk Life Drawing Workshops, inspired by our exhibition, Weird As Folk. These sessions curated by HappeningInMCR will feature artist, Lucy Wright’s wearable folk art.

All levels of experience welcomed, all materials provided and included in the price of the tickets.

Ticket purchases will contribute to HappeningInMCR’s curation of future events.

This event is gratefully funded through the Heritage Lottery Fund.

These events will feature performances and excerpts from The Portico’s Folklore collection, which spans hundreds of books and several centuries.

Life Models will be partially clothed in contemporary folk costumes created by Lucy Wright, and inspired by Weird As Folk’s exploration of the language, lands and legends encompassed within our North West collection.

Diving into local dialect, creatures such as boggarts, customs, lore and landscape, Weird As Folk provides a unique backdrop to inspire your Folk Life Drawings!

Ryan Peter French:

Our other featured artist Ryan French’s work Skies & Flesh provides a further layer of inspiration for Life Drawing participants. Working in traditional oil painting and digital art, he looks to symbolism throughout history like folklore and mythology to explore the absurdity and key events of human life; birth, death, emotion, aspiration, morality, conflict.

Throughout the Dynamic Collections programme, we are inviting audiences to participate in the making of Folklore.

To honour this approach, we have been collaborating with artists, Folklorists, and Critical Friends to co-design our events programme, exhibition, and collection shortlist.

In addition, we have built-in interactive elements running throughout the duration of Weird As Folk (July- November) and the crowd-sourced content will evolve throughout the passing seasons. Each audience interaction and contribution enables us to diversify our approach to future programming.
