Decorate your own traditional seven-point star piñata.
About this Event

Deeply rooted in Mexican celebration, the traditional star-shaped piñata originated in 16th-century Acolman, where Augustinian friars incorporated it into Christmas posadas. The seven points historically represented the seven deadly sins, where breaking the piñata symbolized overcoming temptation, and the treats inside represented blessings. Over time, the piñata evolved beyond its religious roots into an enduring symbol of Mexican creativity, heritage, and community gathering.

In this hands-on workshop, you will decorate your own working miniature piñata while exploring traditional craft techniques with Utah artist Clar Amezcua. Starting with a pre-made papier-mâché form, you will follow a guided demonstration to cut, layer, shape, and attach vibrant crepe paper. Discover how to play with color, pattern, and texture to reflect the bright visual language of traditional Mexican festivities.

Born in Mexico, Clar Amezcua is a multifaceted teaching artist specializing in traditional piñatas and intricate alebrijes. As a dedicated educator who has led workshops and professional development sessions, Clar often teaches alongside her family to preserve Mexico's rich heritage and foster meaningful cultural exchange.
