About this Event
Join artist Ana Brooks for a hands-on exploration of Mata Ortiz pottery, a world-renowned art movement born from the desert sands of Chihuahua. This workshop delves into the revival of Paquimé (Casas Grandes) pottery, where modern artisans have masterfully resurrected the complex geometries and earth-toned aesthetics of the prehistoric Mogollon culture.
Under Ana’s guidance, you will learn the painting styles that define this heritage, blending ancestral symbols with contemporary design. Each participant will paint a plate made by Ana from Utah clay to take home.
Discover how the Mata Ortiz tradition is rooted in the landscape itself — from the historical archeological sites of Mexico to Ana’s hand-sourced clays and pigments from the red mountains of St. George and the Great Salt Lake.
Ana Brooks was born in the small town of Mata Ortiz and began her training at age five. A master artisan and educator for more than 35 years, she has shared her craft with Southern Utah University and Living Traditions, serving as a vital link between the ancient history of the Paquimé (Casas Grandes) region and the vibrant Utah arts community.
