About this Event
Learn the traditional art of Russian doll making without using a single needle.
Irene Pruss is a folk artist with deep roots in the Vladimir region of North-Central Russia, an area famous for its rich traditions. She discovered her true calling in reviving the ancient fabric crafts and toys of her heritage. From authentic techniques, regional dialects, and folklore, Irene will share the knowledge she gained from leading experts at the Russian Museum of Ethnography in St. Petersburg.
Take home your own hand-crafted talisman! In this workshop, you will create a "Good Luck Charm" doll, a traditional protector from Northwestern Russia. Similar to the Amish tradition in America, these dolls are left faceless to ward against spirits. They are also created entirely without needles to respect the integrity of the fabric. Irene will guide you through the process of selecting your own colorful textiles and using traditional wrapping and tying techniques to create a beautiful, personalized doll.
