Monitoring of the water and macroinvertebrate quality at Lake Claremont has occurred to different extents between 2004 and 2016, and then seasonally since 2016. Data collected from these programs have increased the understanding of the ecology and changes occurring at this lake, which has resulted in activities that aim to protect the lake’s ecosystem. Due to reduced rainfall, the lake is now largely a groundwater fed, low flow through wetland. This means also that what enters the lake, stays in the lake and connected groundwater.
The key recommendations to improve the ecosystem at the lake is therefore to reduce pollutant inflows, increase water movement at the lake and stabilise and improve ecological features. These recommendations include removal of weeds and dense biomass at drain entry points and the lake itself and possible installation of aerators to oxygenate the lake. Additionally, continue to monitor water, sediment, and macro invertebrates to assess and improve the effectiveness of these activities.
