As the year comes to a close, we end with community, friendship, and the quiet ways people care for one another.
December's Book Pick: For Such a Time as This by Shani Akilah
Genre: Literary Fiction/Interconnected Short Stories
From: Black British (United Kingdom)
About the book:
Set in contemporary London, For Such a Time as This follows a cast of interconnected female Black British characters navigating friendship, love, grief, family expectations, work, mental health, and life after the pandemic.
Through a series of linked stories, Shani Akilah paints an intimate portrait of community and connection - showing how our lives overlap in unexpected ways, and how ordinary moments can shape who we become.
At its heart, this is a book about people trying their best: to heal, to grow, to love, and to find their place in the world.
Why we chose it:
Many stories about minorities focus on trauma, conflict, or survival. While those stories matter, they are not the whole story.
For Such a Time as This offers something different. It centers the everyday lives of Black Britons with warmth, humanity, humor, and care. It reminds us that minority communities are not only defined by what they endure, but also by their friendships, dreams, joys, and relationships.
As we head into the holiday season, this felt like the perfect book to end the year with: thoughtful, hopeful, and deeply human.
Haven't read the book? Come anyway!
