Building a Feminist Library:

Over the last two years we have invited FMS members to bring a story about a key book resource or creative object that informed their feminist research / research-creation work as well as their feminist praxis to Build a Feminist Library(BaFL) together. Inspired by Max Liboiron’s CLEAR Lab Values Process we worked to collectively identify essential concepts stemming from these contributions. We then worked to trace these values by collectively writing around them. These core lab values now serve as touchstones for how we engage in feminist work. It is our goal to make this a living document that evolves with our membership and the work that we do together and will continue our efforts this year.

Our goals at this meeting will be to discuss the values drafted last year how they influence our research and research-creation work and how they might be elaborated or edited to reflect our ongoing commitments. Following this we will have an open discussion (and potentially a free write session) on the theme of “necessary feminisms.” What are our “necessary feminisms”? How do we use creative and critical feminist work to resist forces of displacement sites of violence exploitation of humans and non-humans and occupation of lands and histories? How can a critical intersectional anti-racist feminism imagine and forge new forms of sanctuary?

Attendees are also encouraged to bring books to propose for the library which the FMS will later acquire for our shelves. Don’t forget to check out the library and consider borrowing a book while you’re here! Those who have borrowed books over the summer are warmly invited to return them to the library so others can read and review them. Visit our website to view the library Zotero.
