About this Event
**Student emails addresses have priority registration for this tour before 15 Oct, part of the from the TU Delft Library.
The Netherlands has a special claim to the windmill with its all-important role in history to reclaim the country’s land. While not a polder mill, Delft is fortunate to have a historic windmill near the centrum. Molen de Roos is the last remaining 18C mill in town and it is still in operation, still grinding organic grain into flour powered by the wind.
Molen de Roos will open its doors and ladders to the TU for several special tour slots as part of the Flying Solo programme, where Dr. Gerard J.W. van Bussel will fill us in on the science and (dis)similarities between the old Dutch windmill and modern wind turbines.
Along with a historic windmill guide, TU Cognitive Robotics Lab and former library staff member, André van der Kraan, who is also a volunteer miller, will explain the current milling operations and blades as well as open data sensors he’s installed where you can follow and track windmill speeds across the country.
About the speaker:

Prof. dr. Gerard J.W. van Bussel is professor of Offshore Renewables at NUS, the National University of Singapore. He is the former chair holder of Wind Energy at the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering. His research interests cover large-scale offshore wind R&D and rotor aerodynamics, in addition to operational aspects, conceptual design of advanced wind energy systems, and wind energy in the built environment. He is a consultant for the wind turbine industry and advises the De Hollandsche Molen and several other windmill foundations on windmill biotope issues, and he is a certified volunteer wind miller.
