Dr. James Scott (Flute) and Dr. Marcin Parys (Piano) will perform an all-German program with music Music of Johann Sebastian Bach, Telemann, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, Muethel, and Boehm, representing the transition from Baroque to Classical.Dr. Scott has crafted a program that addresses two major transitions— that from what we consider the Baroque era in music to the “Classical” and from the Classical to the Romantic. The first of these involves a rebalancing of contrapuntal elements and homophony, a transition from the dominance of the harpsichord to the fortepiano, and an increasing expectation of symmetrical forms. The second includes an expansion of harmonic possibilities, a stronger relationship to literature, an increase in instrumental virtuosity, and a loosening of formal structures typical of the Classical period.
