The Florida Youth Naturalist Program (FYNP) is a new program for young nature enthusiasts interested in learning more about Florida’s environment. Inspired by the Florida Master Naturalist program, this youth program takes kids aged 8 to 13 on a journey through Florida’s ecosystems, from the uplands, through freshwater and to the coast.
Each of the 3 modules is held 2 Saturdays a month for 4 hours each. The second class will be a field trip to the respective ecosystem for a hands-on experience. Once your student has completed all 3 modules, they will receive a certificate from IFAS/University of Florida as a recognized Youth Naturalist.
Ecology/Ecosystems: Students will gain basic knowledge of Florida’s major ecosystems, representative plant and animal species of each ecosystem, and major ecological concepts.
Ecosystem services and threats: Students will gain an understanding of how they benefit from the natural world around them and how their daily life impacts the environment; this basic knowledge will foster an appreciation of Florida’s diverse ecosystems.
Life Skills: Students will practice skills that prepare them for work and life; life skills in the Targeting Life Skills Model include: communication, decision-making, critical thinking, teamwork, empathy, service learning, and many others.
Engagement/Call to Action: Students will participate in service-learning as they learn the process for identifying a need, developing a plan for addressing the need, and taking action in their local community; this knowledge will help youth gain the skills necessary to become responsible community members.
Career knowledge: Students will be introduced to and explore various careers related to environmental education and conservation.
