Florida Gardening

Course Description:

Are you curious about growing your own food at home, but don’t know where to begin? Learn how to turn your black thumb green in this intro to gardening class! We will cover the basics of how, when, and where to start your own herb and vegetable garden, no matter how small your space.

Syllabus:

Week 1: Setting up your garden

This week we will go over different types of gardens, site selection, soil options, and watering schedules. We will also cover my favorite garden tools that you might want to invest in.

Week 2: Planting

In this class we will talk about what to plant and when, with a focus on our climate in zone 10. We will learn techniques for starting plants from seed, making new plants from cuttings, and transplanting starts from the store. This week will include a hands-on component, so feel free to bring gloves.

Week 3: Garden Maintenance

Now we keep our garden growing. This includes weeding, fertilizing, pruning, trellising, and treating pest and disease problems.

Week 4: Harvesting and transitioning through seasons

Techniques for harvesting your veggies, replanting, and options for putting your garden to “bed” in the summer months. I will also share some of my favorite Florida gardening resources so you can continue to learn and “grow.”

If the instructor has to cancel a class for any reason, a makeup class will be offered.

All Lee County Lifelong Learning classes must meet a minimum student enrollment or the class will be canceled and a full refund will be issued.
