The December showing will be the film the Dakota 38 which highlights the healing ride taken by Dakota people to the site of the hanging of 38 Dakota young men by Abraham Lincoln for the "crime" of defending their relatives on Dec 26, 1862.We will discuss the similarities between the Dakota War of 1862 with the current occupation in Palestine in the West Bank and Gaza. In 1858 the United States signed a treaty with the Dakota and promptly broke it confining the Dakota to a smaller area of land, when the Dakota asked the US for food, farming equipment and money as provided for in the Treaty the Lincoln administration through Andrew Myrick famously advised the Dakota let them eat grass and their own dung. In the ensuing Dakota war, the media vilified the Dakota, accusing Dakota warriors of nailing babies to trees and other falsehoods to the point editorials justified genocide against the Dakota-many of whom were exiled outside of their lands. The vilification eventually led to Frank L Baum of Wizard of Oz fame calling for the immediate genocide of the "Sioux"
We will discuss the similarities and have discussion after the film about the healing shown in the film and current issues.
