About this Event
Celebrate the birthday of legendary composer Florence B. Price — right in the historic Dunbar District where her extraordinary story began.
The Dunbar Historic Neighborhood Association (DHNA) invites the community to a special celebration honoring the life, legacy, and classical brilliance of Florence Beatrice Price, the groundbreaking composer born in Little Rock’s historic Dunbar Historic District.
Born in 1887, Florence Price became the first African American woman to have her music performed by a major American orchestra, earning national and international recognition for her extraordinary compositions. Today, her work continues to inspire musicians, scholars, and communities around the world.
As part of the 5th Annual Florence Price Birthday Celebration, guests are invited to attend the elegant Florence Price Garden Party & Derby Hat Celebration in the heart of the Dunbar Historic District.
This festive spring afternoon will feature a live jazz band, a classic antique car exhibit, and a stylish Derby Hat Contest, where guests are encouraged to showcase their most creative and elegant hats.
The event will also highlight the voices of the next generation through a special student exhibition, featuring the winning portraits and essays from the Florence Price Student Contest, celebrating how young people are learning about and honoring her remarkable legacy.
Guests will enjoy hors d’oeuvres, light refreshments, and a fine teas vendor experience, offering a delightful selection of specialty teas perfect for a relaxing garden gathering.
