About this Event
We’re pleased to offer floral sessions this year specifically designed and tailored towards individuals in recovery or on a path to improved mental health. Recovery may look different for different people, and an individual can be recovering from any number of things – addictions and unhealthy habits, harmful or toxic relationships, past traumas, and negative self-talk and self-worth, just to name a few.Research has shown that gardening and horticultural therapy can have significant impacts on mental health, including decreased depressive and anxiety symptoms and increased life satisfaction and sense of community. Several studies by Rutgers University found flowers to have immediate and lasting positive effects on mood and sociability.
Props designer Amanda Moore found a fresh start through flowers on her own road to recovery. Having left her prior career through her battle with addiction, she felt adrift and struggled to regain a sense of purpose. Embarking on a new path in floral design helped her to reclaim her life beyond the lonely and limiting world of addiction. Her hope in offering these sessions is to share the joy of floral design with others on their own recovery journey.
Sessions are open to all, and we welcome anyone seeking to nurture their own mental health and wellness. There are no prerequisites regarding individual recovery, and participants may be in any stage of their personal journey. Individuals who do not identify as recovering or in recovery are also welcome.
*Sessions are designed solely as a form of community engagement and mutual support. They are not intended to replace medical, psychological or other mental health treatment. They are in no way affiliated with the Canadian Horticultural Therapy Association.
