Beth McLaren demonstrating the Floral Art of Sangetsu.
A few of you may know me as a ‘gardener’ – I am a member of three clubs: the Burnaby Rhododendron And Garden Society (BRAGS), the Fraser Pacific Rose Society and the BC Iris Society.
I became interested in Ikebana at RhodoFest when I saw Joan Fairs demonstrating Sangetsu. I took Joan’s business card and later signed up to take her classes. Joan was my teacher for a number of years and then I changed teachers, to study under Mayumi Ichino. I’ve been studying kebana Sangetsu for 10-12 years, and it’s a lifelong practice. In June 2024 I received my instructor’s certificate.
There are over one thousand registered Ikebana schools in Japan and we have five schools in the Vancouver area. What first intrigued me and what I still love about the Sangetsu school, is that it’s simple, natural and beautiful. You can use branches and flowers from your garden to create beautiful arrangements that bring joy to you and also to others.
At your August meeting, I will be doing a demo, showing you a few types of Sangetsu arrangements, using seasonal materials. I will probably do 3 to 4 arrangements and one will be done in oasis so that it can go on the Draw Table.
