About this Event

FUTUNA CHAPEL EXHIBITION - FROM THE ARCHIVE: THE MAKING OF FUTUNA

FLOOR TALKS

DESCRIPTION

The floor talks presented in Futuna Chapel will inform and enhance the experience and comprehension of Futuna Chapel, a collaboration of the Chapel architect John Scott, Chapel artist Jim Allen and the Building Brothers of Futuna.

This exhibition will, in words, drawings, images, sound and physical objects, explore the commissioning, architectural design, art works and the physical construction of this combination of masterworks.

This work was produced when John Scott and Jim Allen were both in their mid-thirties and constructed by a dedicated team of similar aged voluntary building lay brothers.

The exhibition will be brought to life with a number of in-person tours and exhibition floor talks conducted by Gregory O’Brien and Nick Bevin (co-editors of ‘Futuna – Life of a Building’ 2016).

BOOKINGS ARE ESSENTIAL TO ATTEND THIS EVENT

The Futuna Trust is a completely voluntary organisation and all funds raised from the Futuna Exhibition Public Talks go towards the ongoing care, maintenance and operation of Futuna Chapel and also to support various initiatives undertaken by the Trust. This year the Trust continues, in accordance with its evolving tikanga. Booking for these talks is on a koha/donation basis. There is a free ticket type but if you would like to make a koha/donation to the Trust to support the Chapel, please register using the ticket types of $10, $ 15, $20 or $25. Ticketing and GST fees will be absorbed by the Trust.

Nick has been a registered architect since 1987 and was made a Distinguished Fellow of the NZIA in 2022. He retired as a practising architect in June 2024.

In 2006 Nick became involved with the Friends of Futuna Charitable Trust. He was drawn in initially by an early childhood memory of accompanying his parents to the opening of this unique retreat chapel in Karori Wellington on 19th March 1961. He has developed a growing admiration for the body of work created by the Chapel’s architect, the late John Scott, whom he first met in 1983. Since late 2009 Nick has chaired the Trust which has the responsibility of the guardianship of the Chapel. The Trust has funded the Chapel’s staged restoration and endeavours to ensure that this remarkable building, one of New Zealand’s architectural crown jewels, has a meaningful and sustainable life.

With fellow trustee Greg O’Brien, Nick co-edited the book “Futuna – Life of a Building” published in 2016.

Since October 2015 Nick has served as an appointed independent member on the Rārangi Kōrero Committee (Listing Committee) of Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Toanga.
