About this Event

FloodNet Community Sessions: A Community Outreach Event & Workshop! Co-facilitated w/ FORM NYC.

Join us to meet the FloodNet team and learn about our efforts across NYC. Connect with community members, learn about flood sensor technology, and reflect on how the science of a flood sensor is connected to the sensing science of our bodies!

What is the Workshop?

FloodNet’s Sensors & Sensing Module, led in collaboration with CUNY ASRC’s Community Sensor Lab, aims to engage community participants with the flood sensor technology and encourage participant reflection on how flooding impacts their neighborhoods and their health. Community participants are encouraged to use flood sensors, and FloodNet project logic, to explore how flooding may be connected to other relevant community issues, think critically about the scope of flood efforts in NYC, and create their own community-based action strategies in response to flooding.

What is FloodNet?

FloodNet is a cooperative of communities, researchers, and New York City government agencies working to better understand the frequency, severity, and impacts of flooding in New York City. We especially focus on neighborhoods that are vulnerable to high tides, storm surge, and stormwater runoff. FloodNet began in 2020 as a partnership between academic researchers at NYU and CUNY, and NYC agencies, including the Mayor’s Office of Climate & Environmental Justice, NYC Department of Environmental Protection, and the Mayor’s Office of Technology & Innovation.

What The Community Sensor Lab?

As part of a research project supported by the CUNY Adjunct Incubator, science educator and artist (Advanced Science Research Center, The Graduate Center, CUNY) is the co-founder of The Community Sensor Lab, a space for DIY community science and advocacy.

seeks to equip youth and community members with research tools and STEAM skills to better advocate for local policy change on public health and environmental justice. The project mobilizes CUNY undergraduate and NYC high school students as public educators on the versatility of D-I-Y (Do-It-Yourself) electronics and sensors. The lab also consists of a transdisciplinary working group, led by CUNY adjuncts across disciplines of art, science and the humanities, tasked with developing best practices for participatory, intersectional and decolonial research.
