Floating on Cotton: Freedom Maps, Trade Routes and City Codes

Self Help Graphics & Art (SHG) is pleased to announce Floating on Cotton: Freedom Maps, Trade Routes and City Codes, a solo exhibition by Rashonda Bartney (Zoe Blaq), SHG's Beyond the Press artists in residence. The exhibition, deeply rooted in the artist's ancestral history, explores the interconnectedness of culture, identity, and the natural environment. It delves into the rich historical context of Afro-Indigenous peoples, focusing on their migratory patterns and the significance of travel in their quest for safety, resources, and cultural preservation through symbolic maps and objects. Bartney's work reflects today's continued pursuit of housing, food security, and environmental sustainability. Further, the artist will create opportunities to learn through a zine and seed mobile inspired by George Washington Carver's "movable school" and his desire to connect with and teach people, symbolically offering new seeds of knowledge and perseverance.

Floating on Cotton: Freedom Maps, Trade Routes and City Codes is in partnership with Art Share LA and opens on Sunday, December 8, 2024, through February 8, 2025. This exhibition is  part of SHG’s PST Art: Art and Science overall programming which considers work connected to art and environmental sustainability. Funding for the exhibition is made possible by The Mike Kelley Foundation for the Arts and the California Arts Council.
