Flicka is the inspiring documentary about the incredible career and post-retirement life of Frederica von Stade, one of our greatest opera singers. A remarkable mezzo-soprano, she forged a career as a freelance opera singer, who, after she left the stage, focused on bringing musical training to underprivileged students and even to the unhoused in her community.
Brian Staufenbiel’s enthralling doc asks, “Why does everyone want to be in the room with Flicka?” The answer is her irresistible personality, commanding every room and conversation with her enthusiasm for every project, and her joyous love of music and what it can do for people. With archival footage, interviews with colleagues and, of course, time spent with von Stade herself, Flicka is a gift to fans of the singer, or a delightful introduction to one of the memorable characters on the American musical scene.
