About this Event

We are thrilled to welcome Charli Howard to Blackwell's on the 11th of March to discuss Flesh: Decentering the Male Gaze & Reclaiming the Objectified Body. Charli will be in conversation with Helen Mort.

Doors: 6.30pm, starts: 6.45pm

Tickets are £4. Admission is free when purchasing a copy the book in advance.

About the book:

Breasts. Skin. Stomach. Thighs. Arms. Legs.

Women are so much more than pieces of meat, but so often this is what we are reduced to.

In this urgent and powerful series of essays, author and activist Charli Howard explores how society has dissected and sexualised the female body throughout time. Through analysing her own body, one piece at a time, Charli charts the impact of long-term sexual objectification and misogyny on the female body, and how to reclaim it for yourself and, eventually, truly love it as your own.
Through personal reflection and social analysis, she reminds us why we must give ourselves grace when assessing our own bodies, as we are so often viewing them through a lens corrupted long before we were born. With the rise of misogyny and male violence in the modern world, Flesh is an unmissable exploration of what it means to be a woman in the twenty-first century.

"A fierce and tender exploration of what it means to reclaim your own body... blends research with lived truth in a way that feels necessary and expansive." - Yrsa Daley-Ward

About the author:

Charli Howard is an author, model, entrepreneur and women's rights activist. She is an ambassador for Refuge, has successfully lobbied the UK government to criminalise the creation of nonconsensual deepfake pornography and has worked with major global brands including GHD and Spanx.

If you cannot make the event but would like a dedicated copy of the book, please email [email protected] or call us on 0161 274 3331.

Our event format is usually a 45 minute discussion between the author and interviewer, followed by a chance for audience members to ask questions. There will be the opportunity to get your book signed/dedicated after the event. Events are a brilliant opportunity to discover new books, meet authors and likeminded readers and learn something new.

Support your local bookshop and help us keep the Manchester literary scene vibrant and exciting. You can follow us on Eventbrite and social media (@BlackwellsMCR) to keep up to date on upcoming events.
