We’re excited to announce the unveiling of a new installation by Flavia Lovatelli at one of the historic Guard Houses in front of Granby Mill. Selected as an artist-in-residence in March, Lovatelli developed a powerful, site-specific work that pays tribute to the mill workers and the rich history of the mill village.
Lovatelli’s artistic practice focuses on recycling materials, primarily paper, to create intricate, labor-intensive sculptures and vessels. For this Guard House installation, she incorporated textile industry pattern paper, recycled paper, papier-mâché, and doll parts to craft evocative figurative pieces. The symbolic setting and these figures honor the dedicated and diverse workforce of the Olympia and Granby mills.
Join us for the unveiling on Thursday, September 26, from 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm at the Guard House located on Heyward Street across from Tryon Street.
This installation is part of 701 CCA’s Mill District Public Art Trail (MDPAT), a collection of public art that enriches the mill village neighborhoods. The trail's original works were made possible by a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation of Central Carolina Community Foundation, the City of Columbia, and Richland County. The Guard House installations are proudly supported by PMC Property Group.
