We've opted for all treats, no tricks at October's Flatpack Monthly with an evening of British horror and live soundtrack courtesy of acclaimed Swedish band Death and Vanilla (Fire Records).Originally part of the BBC's Omnibus series, the chilling 1968 British supernatural horror classic Whistle and I'll Come to You was adapted by Jonathan Miller from an M.R. James ghost story. The film stars Michael Horden as a fussy professor who, after discovering an ancient whistle, unwittingly summons a terrifying spirit. With its folkloric atmosphere, this tale has acquired cult status, drawing comparisons to films like The Wicker Man.
Death and Vanilla's score masterfully blends tape loops, John Carpenter-esque drum machines, synths, and shades of Birmingham's pioneering band, Broadcast. Their hypnotic sounds create the perfect unsettling mood for this spooky classic.
Accompanying the 42 minute Whistle and I’ll Come to You will be a selection of British folk horror short films.
