Flash Folk: Queering the Tradition | One Rehearsal, One Performance
About this Event
One rehearsal. One performance. One night.
IMPORTANT: If you sign-up please make sure you listen to and learn the songs and look at the lyrics in advance (will share docs and playlist soon). We don't have time to teach, only to run through them on the night. We will print lyrics or you can use your phone for the performance.
Soon we will add YouTube recordings, lyrics and folky context for each song and a spotify playlist. We will email ticket holders with this info soon.
Flash Folk Choir is a one-night pop-up singing collective for all voices. It is not a formal choir, and you do not need any singing experience. The idea is simple: you learn 5 songs in advance, come together for one rehearsal, then perform it that same night at Flash Folk: Queering the Tradition - our Southwark Pride special at SET Social in Peckham.
For this Queering the Tradition edition, we sing old songs of land, labour, love and resistance from the British Isles and beyond - celebrating queer voices, queer stories and queer reworkings of the tradition.
The songs are shared here so you can listen, learn and get familiar with it in your own time.
On the night, we'll gather at SET Social, Peckham (address below) to rehearse together, talk briefly about the songs and meet/greet, then sing them as a group later in the evening.
No auditions. No solos. No pressure.
This is for singers, non-singers, folk lovers, folk sceptics, neighbours, artists, activists, friends and strangers. You can come alone. You do not need to read music. You do not need to know anything about folk.
It is about the feeling of voices in a room, old songs made alive again, and the joy of making something together for one night only.
