MASTERCLASS IN STORYBOARDS: FROM CONCEPT TO ANIMATIC
What is storyboarding? Storyboarding is the vital step between script and finished film. It is the tool that turns written words into images, creating a visual preview of what will later appear on screen. From establishing shots to cinematic shaping of light and space for emotional impact, and from dynamic staging to the minimal backdrops needed for comedy setups, every visual choice has a purpose. Every character pose carries clear meaning, creating a cohesive visual story that ultimately reflects the final film. This masterclass is a unique opportunity to learn from a leading animation professional, enriching an academic journey with practical, in-depth skills while nurturing imagination and intuition. Carolyn will share career insights on the art of visual storytelling through timing, emotion, and comedy.
BIOGRAPHY
Carolyn Gair was born in Toronto, Canada and graduated with a degree in Classical Animation from Sheridan College of Art in 1983. She began her career as an animator and character designer at Toronto's Nelvana Entertainment on popular TV shows, Babar, and Beetlejuice. She moved to Los Angeles in 1991 to work at Warner Bros Studios as a storyboard artist on Tazmania, Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain, Freakazoid and The Sylvester and Tweety Mysteries where she doubled as a writer, often boarding her own scripts. After a brief stint at Nickelodeon on Angry Beavers, a season on Universal’s Curious George, and several freelance months on Sunbow’s obscure TV series The Cramp Twins, she was hired by Disney to storyboard on Kim Possible, where she learned to hone a more cinematic storyboard style. From here she transitioned into the role of feature story artist on such Disney films as Brother Bear 2, Jungle Book 2, Kronk’s New Groove, and Tinkerbell. In 2008 she directed development with John Lassiter and the Pixar team for the 3rd film in the franchise, Tinkerbell and the Great Fairy Rescue. Carolyn left Disney in 2010 to work on Illumination’s Despicable Me, The Lorax, and Hop, before moving onto independent animated features Rock Dog, Free Birds, 10 Lives, and Angry Birds 2, and eventually directed Warner Bros' Scooby Doo and the Haunted High Rise. In 2018 she started her own animation company, Bowling4Rhinos Productions, to write and produce her own stop motion feature, Return To Kellogg (2023). She has since gone on to write and direct several award winning stop-motion shorts, most recently Tin Tune.
