Flags, Firehalls and Firemen

Fire played a defining role in Calgary’s development. As the Sandstone City rose from the ashes of the ruinous 1886 fire, the first firehalls became hot spots of community activity, and the early firefighters forged Calgary’s society, fanning the flames of music, sport and politics. Shari Peyerl will introduce you to some members of Calgary’s Fire Department, including the fiery Chief, the trailblazing woman, and the fighting firemen of the First World War.

CCHS is dedicated to promoting a greater understanding of Canadian and Alberta history for people of all ages.
