FLAG DAY - June 14The American flag, the symbol of our great nation, is held in the highest esteem by the Members of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. And as Elks, we all know the role of our Order in helping to establish a national day of recognition – June 14 – Flag Day.
Why was the flag made? On June 14, 1777, our country's Second Continental Congress passed the Flag Resolution for the United States of America so that our ships couldn't be confused with British warships.
"Resolved: that the flag of the United States be made of thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new Constellation". Only ONE flag in our history had more than 13 stripes. From 1795 to 1818 the flag of the United States of America had 15 alternating red and white stripes. This 15-stripe, 15 star flag is known as the "Star Spangled Banner" and is the subject of our National Anthem. Until an Executive Order in 1912, neither the order of the stars nor the proportions of the flag were mandated. So, flags before this time sometimes showed unusual designs.
