In this in-person only workshop, you’ll be asked to THINK like an actor, playwright, director, set designer, and costumer in order to explore five theatre techniques that can enhance your writing. Writer, editor, and former actor and director Jean Burgess will present improvisation tools and strategies to boost dramatic action in your scenes. You’ll learn a self-editing tool that playwrights often incorporate, and you’ll explore how “thinking like a production designer” can support world building and character development in your writing. These techniques are all practiced by Jean in her writing. There will be participation and group discussion throughout the presentation.
Jean Burgess is a writer, editor, playwright, and workshop presenter. As a former professional stage actor and director, many of her written works relate to the performing arts, including her debut novel, THAT SUMMER SHE FOUND HER VOICE and her nonfiction book, COLLABORATIVE STAGE DIRECTING. Before diving into a writing career, Jean earned an M.A. in Theatre and a Ph.D. in Educational Theatre and taught theatre and speech communications on both the secondary and college levels for twenty-three years.
