Get EXCITED! We get a behind the scenes look into the Cape Girardeau Roller Derby team's practice! We will learn some basic skating skills, watch them in action and put our moves to the test! Physical fitness doesn't have to happen inside a gym, did you know it can be fun? Step out of your comfort zone, and slip on some skates with us! What do I need for class?
Participants must bring is a mouth guard. We recommend a cheap mouth gaurd (Walmart has some, or a sporting store.) Wear comfortable workout type clothing and bring a water bottle.
Event expectations: Brief overview of league details, get the group fitted in loaner gear. Review the basics of skating--stance, how to skate forward, how to fall safely, and how to stop. We usually have some 5-10 minute core workout spots in between drills in order to give our feet a little rest. Their practices last approximately 2 hours but our group is welcome to leave anytime they need!
What if I can't skate? It's important to know that most of us weren't skilled skaters when we first joined--some of us had never skated or even played a sport before joining derby.
Can I bring my own skates: Yes! If anyone already owns skates, a hockey or skateboarding helmet, elbow pads, knee pads, or wrist guards they should bring them but we have a variety of loaner gear in various sizes.
How do I join the Roller Derby Team?
Anyone 18 and over can join. Most members are in their 20s and 30s but some are over 40 as well. All body types are useful and celebrated in derby-short, tall, curvy, muscular, thin, voluptuous, etc. There's no one way to be a good skater or team member, no mold to fit. The only quality that truly matters to us is someone who is willing to learn and work as a team. Dues are only $25 per month (and new folks will need to purchase their own skates/gear within the first 3 months of membership). If anyone decides to join, they'll learn additional skills over the following weeks such as skating backwards, transitioning from forward to backward skating, skating on one foot, hopping, etc., eventually moving on to making contact with other skaters (learning to "seam," hitting with the body, blocking, etc).

So why are we doing this? We understand, walking into a group exercise class can be an intimidating experience so we are coming along with you! Each month we will visit a different local fitness studio and explore a new class format together. Maybe you're finding yourself in a fitness rut and looking to expanding your practice to include different types of movement or if you're still searching for your fitness family, we're here to help!
Childcare is not available.
Please arrive 5-10 minutes early to check in at the facility. And please, i'd love to have suggestions for other classes to visit throughout the year!
